Milestone countdown boxes: Advent calendars are not just for Christmas

Milestone countdown boxes don't have to be for Christmas or New Year; they can also mark the days before a birthday, anniversary, wedding or other celebration.

Advent calendars are a relatively recent tradition, with their roots in Germany in the late 19th century.[1] During the 20th century, they evolved to include printed doors, chocolates, and eventually other products like cosmetics, jewellery and food.[2]

Now so-called ‘anticipation logistics’ is a growing category all year round. Milestone countdown boxes don’t have to be for Christmas or New Year; they can also mark the days before a birthday, anniversary, wedding or other celebration.

In this article, we take a look at milestone fulfilment as a way to generate sustainable demand, smooth seasonal spikes and cater for customers searching for that special way to mark a memorable life event.

Why advent calendars are not just for Christmas

For most consumers, advent calendars are the most familiar form of milestone gift giving – so much so, that many people now consider this to be a generic term for multi-part gift boxes.

‘Birthday advent calendars’ that count down the seven days before a birthday are now a feature of several gift retailers’ websites, including TreatBox[3] and Letterbox Gifts.[4]

If you don’t want to dilute your messaging around advent itself, there are more generic phrases you can use, such as ‘birthday countdown boxes’ and ‘milestone countdown gifts’, as we have done in this article.

A feast of festivals

Even within the religious festival gifting space, Christmas advent calendars are just one of a variety of options that drive a global gift box market of over 170 million units each year, and a segment growth rate of more than 18%.[5]

This represents over half (52%) of the worldwide annual gift box sector, with 70 million units sold in the run-up to Christmas, plus around 38 million for each of Lunar New Year and Diwali. Easter and Ramadan are major contributors to this segment too.

Not all of these are countdown boxes or calendars, but there are signs that subscription boxes are on the rise.

Digital channels drive gift box subscriptions

In 2023-25, retailers worldwide introduced more than 2,000 new gift basket products, including a 22% rise in wellness baskets and an 18% increase in gourmet chocolate assortments.[6]

Subscription models gained over 12 million customers globally as consumers look for gifts that continue to deliver delight on a recurring basis.

“Small businesses and artisanal producers gained more than 20 million new customers via digital sales channels. These trends highlight increasing gift basket market opportunities for premiumisation, localisation and subscription-based gift basket models.”

Bundles of joy

Moving away from festivals, milestone gift giving is an ideal way to count down when approaching a significant life event like moving house or giving birth.

The global market for baby gift bundles is predicted to grow 6.4% per year throughout 2026-35, driven by online sales, curated and personalised gift baskets, and recurring subscriptions.[8]

Subscription models have seen a 37% increase, including deals that see parents receive bundles for newborns, through to infants and beyond.

“Infant baby gift bundles target the 3 to 12-month age group and typically include toys, teething aids, feeding accessories and milestone keepsakes. These bundles appeal to parents and relatives celebrating birthdays and developmental milestones.”

What do Britons want in an advent calendar?

When it comes to product categories, there are some clear favourite contents for advent calendars and milestone countdown crates, as revealed in a November 2025 Ipsos survey.[10]

Asked what type of advent calendars they typically buy for themselves or others, UK consumers replied:[11]

    1. Chocolate: 84%
    2. Cosmetics: 15%
    3. Toys: 14%
    4. Other food: 10%
    5. Pictures: 9%
    6. Alcohol: 8%
    7. Books: 6%
    8. Art/Craft: 5%
    9. Jewellery: 5%
    10. Non-alcohol (e.g. tea/coffee): 5%
    11. Candles: 4%
    12. Other: 2%
    13. Don’t Know: 1%

This highlights the diversity in the festive advent calendars market, and the potential to expand upon that with gift calendars throughout the year across all the different categories of treats that UK consumers enjoy to receive.

How much do UK consumers spend on advent calendars?

The Ipsos survey also asked how much UK consumers have spent on advent calendars in the past, revealing that 15% have spent over £100 on a single countdown calendar before.[12]

A further 11% have spent £51-100, while 13% have spent £31-50, making nearly half of the market willing to spend over £30 per product.

Some have gone even higher. The research found that many Brits have spent several hundreds of pounds on a single advent calendar in the past:

  • £101-150: 5%
  • £151-200: 4%
  • £201-300: 2%
  • £301-500: 2%
  • Over £500: 2%

With the rise in personalised products, curated selections and premiumisation, plus the growth in subscription models, this holds promise for retailers looking to drive substantial year-round revenues.

Benefits for seasonal sectors

Seasonal spikes are a challenge for many sectors – both to satisfy short-term peaks in demand and to remain sustainable throughout the rest of the year.

Over half (52%) of annual gift basket sales occur during seasonal celebrations, with related pressure applied to inventory and fulfilment.

This leads to avoidable losses:[13]

  • 10% waste of perishable product
  • 14% added time to pick customised orders
  • 18% missed sales due to understocking

An efficient and well-planned year-round subscription model is one answer to these problems, while bringing revenue generation earlier in the cycle by encouraging ‘countdown’ sales, rather than gift subscriptions that must be fulfilled retrospectively.
