Eco-friendly and sustainable packaging solutions

For anyone who has watched David Attenborough’s latest Netflix Film “A Life on Our Planet” you will have been left in no doubt that sustainability is a must-have for every business. Over the last 2-3yrs, we have seen a massive increase in interest from our clients to provide green solutions. Businesses are feeling the pressure to go “green” and adopt sustainable practices due to consumer demands1. It’s not just about being seen to do the right thing, your customers demand it. As consumers embrace sustainability, so it has become vital for clients to be transparent in their packaging in order to meet their audience's own values.

We pride ourselves on providing efficient logistics services alongside eco-friendly packaging solutions and even have a whole department dedicated to providing efficient and sustainable solutions for our company and clients! ISO 14001:2015 accreditation means sustainability is built into our core business objectives (which is an environmental framework to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste and drive down costs).

With this in mind, we have frequent conversations with our suppliers in terms of sourcing and innovating sustainable packaging. Our wide range of sustainable central packaging options includes:

  • All boxes are 100% recyclable
  • All bags are 100% recycled and recyclable
  • All bubble bags are made from 50% recycled materials, 100% recyclable and FSC certified

A common request from our clients is eco-friendly alternatives to fill boxes. One well-known product in our industry is Styrofoam (otherwise known as polystyrene) mainly used for keeping items safe during shipping without adding weight. Yet, it has now become of the main components of marine debris as some experts estimate Styrofoam takes 500 years to decompose3, which causes many issues such as4

Toxic and potentially deadly for animals when consumed (can block animals stomachs leading to starvation)

  •          Made with petroleum which is a non-sustainable source
  •           Harmful for people who consume seafood
  •           Possible carcinogen (previously linked to the occurrence of leukaemia and lymphoma cancer)
  •          And many more

At MRM we offer many eco-friendly packing alternatives to fill boxes including:

  • Biodegradable packing peanuts  (made from natural, nontoxic sources that dissolve in water or can be thrown onto compost piles)
  • Wood wool (made from wood shavings – a natural timber-based packing solution)
  • Biodegradable air pouches – 100% recyclable

Our client services team is skilled at supporting your bespoke packaging needs. Previous requests include leaflets made from plantable seed paper, envelopes made from sugar cane and even paper made from elephant dung, you name it –if you have a particular request for your customers we can support it!

We understand how important eco-friendly packaging is to customers and we have the expertise with recycled and recyclable packaging. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with your account manager if you wish to discuss our sustainable alternatives or give Helen a call on 01858 414 767 to see how we can make your campaign more climate-friendly.
